- Off-grid solar systems (i.e. not connected to the utility network)
- Grid-tied solar systems (i.e. plugged right into the utility grid)
And 99% of the time, we recommend the latter. When you install a grid-tied solar PV system, you benefit from:
- Better financing and pricing (thanks to incentives, rebates, and tax credits)
- The ability to generate money or credits from the utility company (thanks to net metering)
- Virtual storage. The entire grid becomes your backup power. You don’t have to worry about batteries.
But the other day, we came across a really interesting article highlighting how effective off-grid solar energy can be. It’s a solid read, but here are the main highlights…
San Diego International Airport has launched a pilot project in which it’ll place solar-powered charging stations throughout the parking lot. Passengers with electric vehicles (EVs) simply drive up, plug in, and recharge their cars.
These “off-grid” stations aren’t connected to anything else but the sun.
Why Are We So Excited about These Off-Grid Solar Systems?
So why exactly do we like this pilot project? After all, we’re not affiliated with these EV charging stations in any way. In fact – one of our competitors is responsible for the launch. If anything, we should be scared, right?
There are 2 main reasons why we applaud this project.
1. It Raises Solar’s Profile
At Sunline Energy, we know solar works. And our customers know it too.
But projects like these help to push solar energy farther into the mainstream. They help raise the technology’s profile and encourage fence-sitters to take a closer look at the unbelievable environmental and financial benefits of solar.
2. It Makes EVs More Mainstream
Electric vehicles are cool. Silent, clean, and sustainable – these cars are becoming increasingly popular throughout California. They’re especially popular amongst drivers who already have solar installed on their own homes (see our earlier article on this growing trend).
As solar energy and EVs both become more mainstream, this is better for everyone. We all benefit from a greener planet.
What’s not to like?
Especially when this shift is fueled by a power source that’s:
- 100% renewable
- 100% clean
- 100% free
Simply put, solar energy is incredible. And we applaud any efforts to help promote the technology’s awesome potential.
