Over the past 4 days, we’ve looked at some of the most popular reasons why homeowners and businesses go solar in San Diego.  And so far, all of these reasons have been highly personal (i.e. they directly benefit the solar PV system owner).

Installing solar panels helps you:

Today, we’ll explore reason #5 – solar power creates local, green jobs.  The benefits are equally powerful, but you only get to enjoy them indirectly.

How Does Going Solar Help to Create Local, Green Jobs?

You can manufacture solar PV modules pretty much anywhere in the world – with most panels coming from China.

Once they’ve been made, however, these panels must be installed by someone on site.  In other words, solar installation, repairs, and cleaning represent job opportunities that can never be outsourced – ever.

So great.  Why should you care?

Well, first let’s look at some numbers:

  • In 2012, America’s solar industry grew to $11.5 billion, helping to create an additional 14,000 new jobs that didn’t exist.  Keep in mind that this was during one of the worst recessions in US history when unemployment was at record levels.
  • The following year (in 2013), employment within the solar industry grew an additional 20%.
  • Of the 50,000 solar professionals currently working in California, roughly 20% come from the Los Angeles/San Diego corridor.  And 55% of these work exclusively in solar installation.
  • A disproportionate number of solar professionals are returning military veterans.  Ironically, men and women in uniform are also disproportionately affected by nationwide unemployment.  Solar is helping to put America’s heroes to work.

So again, why should you care?  Local green jobs are great for those individuals who fill these jobs.  But what does this mean for you exactly?

It means a lot.  Unemployment is bad for everyone, especially when you factor in:

  • Less economic growth
  • Higher crime rates
  • Austerity measures
  • Slashed budgets

When you install solar panels on your property, you’re using sunshine to power your appliances.  But that same clean and free sunshine can also make the local community stronger and more economically sustainable.

Everyone wins.  And those wins grow larger as more and more people throughout San Diego decide to go solar.
