San Diego Gas and Electric has an interesting way of lobbying for rate increases. The Public Utilities Commission authorized an initial annual revenue increase for the utility company of $123 million, for a new total of $1.73 billion, for 2012.
Subsequent annual increases of nearly 3 percent will be tied to the urban Consumer Price Index, this was done by a 5-0 vote,
On the electric side, a typical customer will experience an increase of 12.2% according to the utilities commission.
SDG&E has the highest electricity ratesamong the state’s three large investor-owned utilities. California’s residential electricity rates are the ninth highest in the nation, but actual bills compare more favorably because of the climate, conservation and more efficient energy use.
